new t shirt made, eye on springfield

incase anyone wants to have a go at making it themselves this is how to do it.

get a white shirt, fabric paint (dark green, blue, orange, pink, grey), potatoes, knife, paint brush, black fabric pen.

cut out the following shapes on potato halves (much like potato stamping on paper) a rectangle, a triangle, a bar, a small square, and the capital letters E, Y, O, and N **the N must be backwards on the spud - test on paper first. you can see how big to make these from the picture but as a guide the letters are about 1.5x1 inches in dimensions, the rectangle 2x1.5, the bar is 0.5 inches and in total length about 5-6 inches but i doubled the stamp for it. triangle 1.5 inch each side.

put a board inside the t shirt to protect the back and stamp the background with the little squares in blue. you can make several on the potato and repeat for speed but test first on a piece of scrap or paper to make sure it replicates correctly. wait for 5-10 mins to dry.

then stamp the rectangle in green near the top left of the blue squares, the triangle grey towards the bottom left, and the bar pink in line with the bottom of the rectangle extending from an inch from it to the end of the other side. next do the letters in pink starting with the first E half over the left upper of the rectangle and the Y over half the right upper.

last the hard bit, get a thin paint brush and paint on the word springfield across the bottom. it helps to place it properly with the top of the s on the bottom of the rectangle, the join between the r and i below the start of the bar and the d just hitting the triangle. search google for the an image of eye on springfield to help. last once it is dry get the fabric pen and go round the letters then make them blocks by adding a third dimension. the shadows fall to the left for on and to the right for eye. you can draw this with the pen and fill in with black fabric paint for speed.

sounds difficult but is not if you have a steady hand and some patience.

i found this on the street yesterday. weird that you can find a little bit of someone else’s life like that. i tried to transcribe it but some of it is in german and some just hard to read…it turns out paleography is just as hard in a contemporary context as when looking at three hundred year old documents…
